Reviewing your Customs Broker - Is it time for a change?

Thousands of importers deal with CBSA annually through the services of a customs broker to get their shipments cleared through customs. For every declaration, a large amount of shipment information must be provided. Everything from country of origin and values, to participating agency required data, tariff classifications, reason the goods are shipping, and end use.

A strong partnership with your customs broker is essential for the success of an importing business vs an uncomfortable and costly endeavor.

When was the last time you reviewed what your broker was doing for you, and what if it’s time for a change?

Why consider the change, and how would you go about it without disrupting our operations?

  • Service Failures? Are you and your carrier providing ample time for processing declarations, yet your broker causes repeated clearance delays resulting in added charges or delays to your supply chain?

  • Inconsistent customs compliance? Do you review your declarations and see quality control issues with your entries? This can lead to overpayment of duties, errors to trade data reporting, penalties, and a tarnished reputation with CBSA.

  • Poor or inconsistent customer service, although you do communicate what your expectations are?

  • Have you outgrown your current broker? Is it possible that they do not offer all of the services or timeframes your growing business requires?

When was the last time you reviewed what your broker was doing for you, and what if it’s time for a change?
